The NCCC has been hard at work meeting with the Nations, Rights Holders, and Agencies since the beginning of October. After the Nations in Assembly confirmed the Commission's role at the September AGM, the Commissioners and their technicians worked with the Caring Society to develop the Engagement Toolkit and resources available on the "Engagement: CHRT 80" page on this website.

Every region went about the engagements a bit differently, according to the needs of their people, however everyone worked to answer the same set of 50 questions, divided into 10 theme areas.

This work moved incredibly quickly, however the responses received were thorough and illuminating. No surprise, many of the responses received reflected the comments of concern many of the Chiefs shared in October 2024.  An overview of the work was given in a webinar on November 28th, which can be viewed below.

The NCCC will be hosting a dialogue session on December 1st at the Rogers Center, and may also be hosting a plenary session at the AFN SCA (time and date TBD).

The NWT has decided to request support from the Nations in Assembly for their CFS funding to be transferred from Canada directly (skipping the Territorial Government), and the NCCC expects to see a resolution to this end at the SCA.

Each region's engagement was directed by their Commissioners and Technicians.

What's next?

The NCCC is reviewing your feedback now, sorting it by theme and region and making sure that all of the suggestions that fall within the CHRT mandate are accounted for. Any comments received that fall outside of the scope of the original complaint to the CHRT will not be discarded, but will be kept to inform other processes, including Jordan's Principle.

The NCCC brought to you by Resolutions 60 and 61 of the Special Chiefs Assembly, October 2024
